Welcome to LEBBS

The

Lincolnshire Emergency
Blood Bikes Service

Formed in January 2012 by an enthusiastic group of volunteers, LEBBS emulate the services provided by other Blood Bike groups around the country.

Responsible for transporting critical medical supplies across the county and beyond.

Welcome to LEBBS…

…and welcome to the world of rapid response, life-saving journeys, and unwavering dedication – where a group of selfless individuals come together to form the backbone of an emergency blood bike charity.

In the critical moments when time is of the essence, and medical professionals need vital supplies transported swiftly and securely, these unsung heroes spring into action. They are the silent saviours of our healthcare system, offering a lifeline that connects donors, hospitals, and patients in need.

Blood bikes have been running in some parts of the UK since the late 1960’s. They provide an out-of-hours courier service transporting essential medical items such as blood, pathology & microbiology specimens, medical notes, pharmaceutical products, equipment and donor breast milk between hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Emergency blood bike charities are a beacon of hope in our communities, providing an invaluable service by transporting blood, organs, medication, and medical equipment to those who need them urgently.

Here at LEBBS…

…we operate around the clock, 365 days a year, often in adverse weather conditions, and without any financial gain.

How can we help?

Frequently asked questions

Q: Will I use my own bike or car?

A: No, LEBBS has a fleet of motorcycles and cars that are fully insured and equipped for the purpose. Please visit the fleet page for more details of the vehicles we use.

Q: When do I get to ride or drive for LEBBS?

A: We run a duty rota for riders, drivers and controllers, this is usually planned one month in advance. Once you have sent in the dates you will be available, our rota manager will compile the list and publishes accordingly. We try to keep each month’s riders or drivers in reasonable proximity to save on mileage when transferring the vehicles between riders and drivers.

Q: Can anyone ride for LEBBS?

A: For insurance purposes, riders must have held a full motorcycle licence for at least 2 years, be 25 or older, hold an advanced qualification, have no more than 6 penalty points and be a registered LEBBS operational member.

Q: Is it only in Lincolnshire?

A: We currently support three coverage areas within Lincolnshire.

  1. Boston Pilgrim and Grantham Hospital
  2. Lincoln County Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby
  3. Scunthorpe and Goole & District Hospitals

However, you could be sent to any healthcare facility in Lincolnshire or beyond. Our aim is to give these hospitals a professional cover, we don’t turn down any ride – that means you should be prepared to go where they ask at any time over your duty period.

Q: I do not hold an advanced motorcycle qualification, can I still ride for LEBBS?

A: ALL riders have to be advanced, you may however still become a member of LEBBS and be a driver and/or controller until you have qualified.

You need to have to have at least one of the following advanced qualifications before riding for LEBBS:

  1. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM)
  2. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) at Silver or Gold grade
